Childhood Sexual Abuse

Scope of The Issue

1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys is a victim of child sexual abuse

Self-report studies show that 20% of adult females and 5-10% of adult males recall a childhood sexual assault or sexual abuse incident

Children are most vulnerable to CSA between the ages of 7 and 13

The Impact of Childhood Sexual Abuse

Survivors of CSA are more likely to:

  • Develop symptoms of drug abuse
  • Experience PTSD as adults
  • Experience a major depressive episode as adults
  • Be victims of rape and domestic violence in the future

The negative long-term consequences can be mitigated by getting treatment and support early.
