An analysis of a 2009 study by UC San Francisco on the effects of nutritional changes in the WIC program showed significant improvements in maternal health. The changes added $10 to the monthly food budget so they could buy fresh vegetables and whole grain bread instead of fruit juice. Women were less likely to get preeclampsia, a dangerous condition in pregnancy related to high blood pressure, and the infants born were closer to a healthy birth weight.
“We saw these improvements in high-risk moms and babies, even with these relatively modest improvements in the nutritional content of the WIC food packages.”
